Bringing NiCad rolling stock batteries back from the dead

Writer: Paul AlexanderPaul Alexander

Technobility has built up battery energy expertise to offer unique services and opportunities for our clients. Rolling stock batteries are costly to replace and battery failures lead to inservice delays and penalties from fleet availibilty issues.

Rolling stock batteries are used in a series string stationary application where a number of equal voltage and capacity batteries (an example is 4 x 12 volt batteries = 48 volts).are connected to achieve a desired output voltage. An imbalanced state occurs in a battery pack where an individual batteries capacity and float voltage are not matched with the other batteries within the pack. The imbalanced battery discharges quicker, reducing the whole battery pack performance and it will charge quicker, leading to an overcharge state and gassing.

Our re-qualification battery test system improved the capacity of the NiCad light-rail battery packs from 21% capacity to 90% capacity, an improvement of 69% and a significant saving for our client who believed that the battery packs needed to be replaced with new.

The battery improvement with each addition cycle on our re-qualification system shows a significant improvement in the capacity and performance.

Our re-qualification battery test system is designed for use with NiCad and Lead Acid batteries and should be used to maintain your rolling stock series string batteries at 12 month intervals to ensure longevity, reliability and to reduce battery failures and replacement costs.

Our test system is completely automated and records the results in the data acquisition system that is used to formulate a report and certificate of conformance.
